Arnold Esten Thomas
Mr. Thomas enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps at the age of 19 years old and served until he was 23. Shortly after that, he joined the U.S army and served for the next 3 years.
On July 15, 1958, Arnold was involved in the Lebanon crisis. He was in the first wave of 1,700 marines that stormed the beaches of Beirut. They were ready for combat, weapons loaded and backed up by 70 warships in the Mediterranean Sea. Arnold said he knew he was facing death, but when they reached the beach they saw Lebanese sunbathers and the venders quickly brought carts of cigarettes, drinks and sandwiches for them. He was so relieved and so thankful. He was dishcharged from the marines two years later.
In August of the same year, he enlisted in the Army and asked to be sent to Hunstville’s Redstone Arsenal. It was there that he met the love of his life Helen Kirkland and they were married 15 months later. During this time, he was on high alert during the Cuban Missile Crisis which was a very scary time for him and his family. Later he was sent to Korea just to be told it was a mistake and he was not supposed to be there. With no jobs available for his specific training, he was sent to guard to DMZ which has been described as one of the most dangerous places on earth. Although Arnold faced many life threatening situations, God watched over him and kept him safe. He was discharged from the Army and was later employed at Hunstville’s Redstone Arsenal working on the Saturn V Rocket.
Years later, Arnold started working with his oldest son Toby Thomas at United Pest and Turf and retired in 2007. Arnold and Helen were married over 46 years and had 3 children and 2 grandchildren when he passed away in 2009. He is so very missed.
